Day 5 in Japan: The Bullet Train to Niigata

The Bullet Train to Niigata

Today marked the start of the next chapter in our Japanese adventure as we traveled from Tokyo to Niigata, the heart of Koi farming. We left the hotel at 10:30 AM and, now well-versed in navigating Tokyo’s efficient rail network, made our way to Tokyo Station. From there, we boarded the bullet train on Platform 20—a marvel of Japanese engineering. Clean, fast, and incredibly smooth, the bullet train journey took approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes to reach Nagaoka Station. From there, it was a short car ride to our base for the next leg of the trip: the New Plaza Hotel in Ojiya.

The New Plaza Hotel is perfectly situated to explore the many Koi farms scattered throughout Niigata. After a late night in Tokyo, where the group enjoyed a few drinks and kept spirits high with our own version of a Japanese bush tucker trial featuring Michael, everyone is still in great spirits and thoroughly enjoying the trip so far. The camaraderie and laughter have made this experience even more memorable.

Arriving at the hotel, we’re ready for some rest before diving into the exciting task of Koi buying tomorrow. The anticipation of visiting world-renowned Koi farms and discovering the finest specimens to bring back home is electrifying.
